Judge's Comments:
What impressed me most about this book was its unique structure that
builds a traditional narrative in the non-traditional form of journal
entries. The effect of this structure is a sense of intimacy with character;
a solemn, introspective tone; and emotional depth. (Also) Characterization
is strong.

" ... Knitted into the journal are samples of her writing, bits of
poetry, a profile subject, a movie plot. For anyone interested in language
and writing, HYMN offers a tantalizing view of a writer in action."
